Although only one is needed, two Combustion Engines using Fuel can fully power a quarry (each engine produces 5 MJ/t running on Fuel). Magmatic Engines produce 4 MJ/t and are also suitable. The Buildcraft quarry breaks every block, one after the other, top to bottom. It will also stop if it hits Lava, but will break Obsidian, which means you are encouraged to place Water at the top.
