The higher your popularity is, the more respect you get from the villagers, and trading discounts offered by villagers in due to you having the hero of the village status effect (an effect currently only available in Bedrock Edition) stack with those triggered by high popularity, making trades even cheaper than they would be otherwise.

Your popularity with the village only effects the point when iron golems will start attacking you, it doesn’t effect breeding. If you kill a villager then the villagers won’t breed for 3 minutes, but that’s all. My best guess is you have them in too large of an area so they don’t see each other when they are both willing to breed.

Villager children are understandably more important than adult villagers, so attacking or killing one causes you to lose 3 or 5 popularity points, respectively. Killing an iron golem.

In 1.14, village popularity has been changed. Every villager now stores gossip for each player, and each gossip ‘instance’ contains the type (major_negative, minor_negative, minor_positive, trade, etc.) and the strength (how many times it counts). The villagers also share the gossips when they meet up near a bell.
