The only way to stop blazes from spawning would be to place torches all around the area as blazes can spawn even in pretty high light levels thus, you would have to place a torch approximately once every 2 blocks or so. @EarthToAccess Blazes spawn in light level 11. Torches emit light level 14, so they prevent blaze spawns within 2 blocks radius (which is pathetic). You can create a temporary blaze spawner switch with 4 dispensers with lava buckets – letting the lava spread a bit, there’s a layout where 4 +-shaped columns of lava will create enough light to prevent all blaze spawns.

According to the official wiki “Blazes can spawn anywhere in the individual nether fortress room structures, or on any nether brick anywhere within the bounds of the entire fortress.” Obviously placing slabs seems to remove most of the spawning spaces but does this mean I have to fill all the rooms with blocks or would destroying the rooms work as well?
