Pumpkin stems need a minimum light level of 10 in the block above the stem to grow and give pumpkins. Why wont my Minecraft melons grow? If there is no dirt, grass or farmland around the melon stem, a melon cannot grow. Another melon will grow in place of any other harvested melon. Any stem adjacent to a melon block will connect to it.

Hmm, that would explain why my pumpkins aren’t growing as well. Thanks for posting the question. I have an underground farm on a server where I have a stone area next to the watered soil and I couldn’t figure out why they weren’t growing. Now I know and will rectify this problem with actual dirt when I get back on that server.
Try removing the blocks above the stems. Melons and pumpkins, for whatever reason, will not grow if there is a solid block above their stem. You can replace those blocks with any “transparent” block, which includes slabs and stairs, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble making it look okay.
